Inward Dog
My yogi friend Sophia recently introduced me to the concept of inner yoga. When we assume a physical stance, like downward dog or warrior pose, we align our bodies in a particular posture. Energy flows through us in a specific shape, guided by the loosening or contraction of our muscles and the rhythm of our breath.
But yoga, as practiced for centuries, involves much more than these physical poses. Another type of yoga involves assuming an emotional stance, and giving shape to the flow of our feelings as well.
Try this. Sit quietly in a room and assume an inner stance of tenderness. What does it feel like to extend that tenderness to the loved ones in your life? To the people who are suffering in the world? To your children, your pets, and your garden. What does it feel like to be tender toward yourself?
There are as many emotional poses as there are physical ones. What does a welcoming pose feel like? A pose of wonder? Curiosity? Generosity? Gratitude?
Our hearts and minds have a shape, and with practice, we can choose shapes that keep them flexible and strong. What poses do you want to learn?
